Class Blog 23rd January 2026

In maths this week we have been learning about numbers to 20. On Wednesday we worked in pairs to collect 20 objects from around the classroom. After one minute Mrs Smith stopped us and asked us how many we had collected and how many more we needed to find.

This term in History we are learning about toys in the past. This week to start our learning we set up our own museum using our own toys. We looked around our museum and talked about what modern toys are like. We learnt that lots of modern toys are made from plastic, are colourful and need batteries to work.

Welcome back to school Squirrel class!

This week in English we have started reading a lovely story called Dogger. Dogger is a story about a boy called Dave who loses his favourite toy dog.

This week in history we learnt about what household objects looked like in the past. We used some Victorian artefacts such as a mangle, a carpet beater and a wash tub and dolly.

We have been getting in the Christmas spirit this week. We loved performing our Christmas play to all our grown-ups. In RE we have been learning about the nativity story, which is the Christian story of Christmas.

This week we have been helping the Little Red Hen to write instructions to make bread for the other animals. On Monday we followed instructions to make our own bread. It was yummy!

In maths this week we have been learning about doubles. We used ladybirds to find doubles of numbers up to 20.

In English this week we have been reading the story of the Little Red Hen. We wrote sentences from the story remembering our capital letters, finger spaces, full stops and using our phonics.

This term in history we are learning about what Eckington was like in the past. This week we have been comparing photographs of Eckington now and in the past. We were history detectives and looked for things that were the same and different.

This week in science we went on a leaf hunt to observe what trees we have in our school grounds. We collected samples of leaves and then used an identification chart to find out what trees they came from.

During our walk around Eckington last week we noticed there was lots of litter on the playground. So this week in PSHE we learnt about why litter is dangerous to animals and then we made litter posters to stick up in our windows to remind people to put litter in the bin.

This week we enjoyed one of our cultural days learning about the country and traditions of Greece.

We made flags, enjoyed Greek food and dancing, tried writing some Greek letters, decorated vases with Greek patterns and learnt about Greek gods.

In science this term we are learning about plants. We have planted pea seeds this week so that we can watch them grow.

Class Blog 26th September 2025

This week in English we have been writing letters to the giant in Jack and the Beanstalk. He sent us a letter asking if we knew who took all his things.

We focused on our letter formation, learning about short letters, tall letters and tail letters.

This week in PSHE we talked about being kind and caring. We created our class friendship tree. Each of us wrote our name on a leaf and then we drew a fruit or flower which showed how we can be a kind friend.

Class Blog 5th September 2025

Welcome back to school and welcome to Squirrel class! The children have all had a super first day. We wrote postcards of our holiday to Sammy Squirrel. Then in the afternoon we did some super science. We learnt why it is important to wash our hands with soap. Then we learnt what happens when you mix different things together…we made a volcano!
