Wow, what a fun filled week we have had! Many of us visited the theatre to see the Jack and the Beanstalk pantomime. This was very exciting as we travelled all together by coach and some of our family and friends joined us too. Our teachers would like to say thank you to those who volunteered to join us.

We have been talking about our hopes and dreams this week too. It isn’t too late to return your hopes and dreams card to school for our celebration display. We look forward to reading them!

Learning to read is so much fun at Birk Hill. Here we are choosing our library books. We enjoy selecting new books each week and sharing them with our family and friends. We are invited to visit the school library every Tuesday morning.

As you will have noticed, the weather outdoors has turned very cold recently. We have been learning how to stay warm outdoors. As we love to explore outdoors so much, please help us to remember to bring our hats, gloves and scarves to school. Many of us have learned how to zip our coats up which is really important at this time of year. Our teachers have a special place where we can keep our wellingtons and waterproof suits should we wish to bring those to school too.

Did you know we have had two very special visitors in our classroom this week? Two frogs came to meet us! This led to us asking lots of questions to find out all about them. Mrs Fairweather knows all about frogs so she answered some of our questions too. Many of us wanted to use information books to find out more. We then recorded our findings by writing our facts down.

We have also been learning about road safety this week. Ask us if we can remember what to do to stay safe.

“Think, stop, look, listen, wait then walk!”

Our teachers were incredibly proud of us this week when we showcased our learning at our class assembly.  Seeing us perform through song, story and speaking made our family members in the audience feel very proud of us too.

Since joining our team in September, we have flourished in confidence and self belief. Our teachers would like to say a huge thank you for coming along to see us in action.

Next week we will be reading the story of ‘Peace at Last’ We will be drawing story maps and learning how to write numbers.

Here we are in our very own Doctor's Surgery. Reading the story of 'Funny Bones' inspired us to find out about the human body. We are able to talk about our different bones and why we need them. We discovered that the skeleton of a baby changes over time. This inspired us to bring our baby photographs into school to talk more about how we change. Don't forget to come along to our class assembly next week where we will be showcasing all that we found out.

Welcome back to school everybody!

This week we have started our baking sessions! Did you see the delicious biscuits that some of our friends made? Baking allows us to develop maths skills whilst having lots of fun! We were able to weigh the ingredients and measure different amounts. We even timed how long the biscuits were in the oven.

We have also enjoyed reading ‘Funny Bones’. This led to us asking lots of questions about why our bodies have skeletons. We looked closely at the difference between an adult skeleton and a skeleton of a baby.

Please remember to send my baby photo into school on Monday, as we are going to look how at we have changed over time.

As always, we have been really busy learning in Foundation Stage 2 this week. The week began with some of us learning all about the festival of Diwali. We spent the day ‘in India’ on Wednesday and joined in with Indian stick dancing, made our own Diva Lamps and constructed our own lanterns.
Our teacher talked to some of our family members this week to explain how we learn maths skills in school. Here you can see that we went on a nature hunt outdoors. This sparked a discussion about length and size. You can see how we ordered the sticks by comparing the different lengths.

This week has been really fun in Reception. We have been reading the story of ‘Whatever Next?’ This inspired us to find out about what life would be like on the moon. We talked about the things we would want to take with us if we visited the moon. You will see some of our lists on the wall in our classroom.

As you already know, we love to read at Birk Hill! We were extremely lucky this week as Trudi, the Librarian at Eckington Library, came to visit us. Trudi talked to us about what we can do if we have our own library cards, and shared two stories with us that we hadn’t read before. We would like to say “thank you” to Trudi!

This week we found an exciting discovery in our classroom. Did you see where the spaceship landed? We talked about where it may have come from and what could be inside it. This sparked our motivation to write as we wrote messages to the owner of the spaceship. Watch this space to see if our predictions were correct! We also became scientists as we made ‘eruptions’ using simple ingridients. You could try this at home with an adult using: bicarbonate of soda, vinegar and washing liquid. You may want to add some food colouring or power paint, along with glitter, to make the eruption even more exciting!

We have been very busy in Reception this week! We have taken an interest in the role of Fire Officers. Our teachers set up a Fire Station in our classroom so we could extend our play.

We have each been given a Reading Record this week. Our Reading Records stay in our book bags and we need to bring them to school everyday. Writing in our Reading Records gives our grownups at home the opportunity to share our reading experiences at home with our teachers.

Also, our teacher would like to let you know that PE will now be on Mondays for Reception children.

We look forward to more exciting learning next week, when we will be reading the story of 'Aliens Love Underpants'.

Yet another busy week for Nursery. We have been looking at the book Owl Babies.

We had a gardening week, it was tiring digging out the weeds in the planters. But we enjoyed planting new plants. We cleaned our garden sweeping up the leaves and twigs, then we made Owl Baby nests with them. We helped Mrs Holland to hang lots of bunting. It looks so much better now.

We have had a fun filled start to our time in Nursery. We decided the morning Nursery would be called the ‘Ducks’ and the afternoon Nursery the ‘Ducklings.’

This week we have been reading the book Handa’s Surprise. You can read this story online at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1Vmf4Cwvls. We enjoyed looking at the book and making fruit salad.

In phonics the ‘ducks’are looking at alliteration, with beginning sounds s, b and c. The ‘ducklings’ are looking at general sounds; we have been for a walk around school listening to all the sounds we can hear.

We are excited about continuing our learning journey.
